drupa is an all-encompassing show of print technology, of which wide format is just a part. In recent years, the importance of offset litho has been reduced with the rise of digital printing technologies. The nature of the printing industry has also changed as the distinctions between different types of operations have blurred by print service providers (PSPs) providing a bigger part of their customers' total print requirements. Although WFP was hard to avoid at drupa, this year's show provided a mixed picture of wide format activity. Although there were notable developments in technology, supplies, and products (and expected incremental improvements to existing products) for WFP, a lot of the wide format innovation was obscured by developments in smaller format production (e.g., nanography by Landa Printing, larger but not (wide format) digital printers, and an increase in importance for packaging and label printers). This report is one of several prepared by different services within the InfoTrends Production Group covering specific topics. For a general overview of the key themes from the show and full details of the other reports please see the show report drupa 2012: A Study in Contrasts. |
